Luka is a 9-10 mos old male smooth coat Border Collie. Very much still a puppy, he is a busy boy with lots of energy. He LOVES toys, especially jolly balls, tugs and people. He has recently learned that bringing the toy back to fetch again or tug is more fun than playing keep away. He loves everyone he meets and is very appeasing. He can be nervous in new surroundings or situations, (he will flatten himself on the ground when unsure) but with patience, he warms up quickly. He loves pets, praise and belly rubs and is a great cuddler. Although he plays well with other dogs, he would do best in a home as an ONLY PET. He resource guards with other dogs (not with people), including food, toys, areas where food is kept or was just prepared, his people, etc. This would be a non-issue without other pets in the home and has not been an issue out walking around or in training around other dogs.Young children would not be a good fit for him when resource guarding is involved.
Luka is crate-trained and does well in the crate. He will vocalize if there is a lot going on but has gotten better since he goes to work with me at the training center where I am working other dogs and there is a lot of activity. He knows sit, down, stay, rings a bell to go outside and is learning basic house manners. Most of his training time has been spent teaching him to be appropriate in the house with my dogs regarding the resource guarding. Since he is still a puppy and learning manners, he gets into mischief if unattended. I think he may have been left outside to entertain himself a lot in his former life since he has developed some bad habits, such as digging and leaping/biting the bark off the trees when unattended. He is easily interrupted from that behavior. By going outside with him for potty and play breaks, this habit should be broken with time.
His ideal home would be one with a fenced yard as an only pet in an active pet home or possibly a sport/agility prospect, no young children. He has gained a lot of confidence through clicker training. He has been on some of the agility equipment and enjoys learning new things. He is really a fun-loving, happy young boy!
